Shooter - The Movie, Not the Happy Gilmore Villain

Posted 2007-03-26 09:05:41

Someone at work sent me a link to the National Post review of Shooter, the new Mark Wahlberg movie.

There's 2 reasons I like this review. The first is the opening paragraph:

Just in case it isn't clear from the title, Shooter is about a guy who's really good at shooting things. No, not a sniper, a shooter. It's a bit like the decider, who's good at deciding things. But with guns.
The second is work related...

For those who don't know, I work for Novator Systems in Toronto, on the FTD team. So to our surprise, our database security comes into play in the movie:
Luckil (sic), the FBI doesn't really live up to the last letter in its acronym. They've just let go of their best new recruit, and the agent in charge of pursuing financial leads -- who comes across some credit card receipts for flowers Swagger had delivered last year --actually says at one point, "I cracked the FTD database."

Cracked the FTD database? Is it really that difficult to secure access to a florist's records? Are there top-secret passwords only the highest-ranking snapdragon expert can decode?
Awesome! Free plug!

StumbleUpon

My old friend Faron sent me a link to a site called StumbleUpon, which is for finding cool sites on the internet.

They have a Firefox Addon which I installed, and it allows you to click a button to randomly bring up a site and then "Yay" or "Nay" it.

So if I find anything cool from it, you'll probably see it linked off of here :)

Psychology of Security

Posted 2007-03-14 19:08:24

While visiting my friend Pete's site, I saw a link to an interesting essay on security.

The timing of reading this is interesting for me. I just went on vacation a little while ago and was on a plane for the first time in years. I've been on a plane only a few times in my life, but once when I was a kid, I got really scared flying. This time around, I remembered being scared when I was young, so was prepared for being scared again, and really worked myself up to be scared.

The essay linked above discusses people logically knowing statistics/risks of things involved, and I logically understood that flying is statistically safer than driving.

By the time I was in the air, I was fine, and was completely comfortable on the landing and the flight home. I knew I had just convinced myself to be scared in the first place.

Anyhow, the essay was very interesting for me, partially based on the timing in my life. Hope you enjoy it too.
