Election
Posted 2006-01-25 08:36:15
I haven't written anything much about the election this time around... I think I put a lot more on this site for the 2004 election, but didn't have the energy this time. I mean, when the same candidates are arguing the same issues just over a year later, how do you become passionate about it again?
Anyhow, I guess I'm somewhat relieved with the election outcome. I'm no Stephen Harper fan, but I think it was time for the Liberals to lose. While I don't think the sponsorship scandal was the end of the world (what's a few hundred million in terms of the amount of money spent by the government anyway), it certainly wasn't acceptable and the government needed to be removed at some point. Of course, it would be even better if some of the people involved went to prison, but I'm not holding my breath.
I'm just happy that we still have a minority government. Even though it's harder for the winning party to push through a mandate with a minority, it seems to make sense - if no party is getting 50% of the popular vote, then there probably shouldn't be a majority government. But maybe that's just me.
Anyhow, what really inspired me to write this morning was this article from the Toronto Star about an American student at the University of Toronto who managed to vote in Monday's election, despite not being a citizen. I guess it is a result of our trusting nature in Canada (and maybe a lax attitude to make the voting process less painful to increase voter turnout), but it is fairly troubling. For the 2003 Provincial election, I remember only having to provide a copy of my phone bill and my driver's licence to get onto the list in my new riding, so I suppose it's not that unbelievable that this guy voted on Monday.
Well, maybe that's why voter turnout was so much better this time around - illegal voters!

Be careful of what you type the next time you're on Google.com - the Bush Administration wants to know if you're searching for porn.

Been A While..
Posted 2006-01-04 08:17:55
It's been a while since my last update, so here goes.
I want to start by saying Happy (belated) Holidays to everyone. The last few weeks busy, then relaxing. Things are slowly getting back to normal.
This weekend, I'm getting corrective laser eye surgery done, so will be off the computer for a few days starting Friday. I'm really looking forward to this, it will be nice to not have to wear these damn glasses everyday. Finally, I can direct "Four Eyes" insults at others again!
The Jukes have got some reviews for our album recently. The reviews are all very positive, which is very rewarding.
Anyhow, off to work for now, will update more soon.
