Rosa Parks

Posted 2005-10-25 08:44:28

Rosa Parks died yesterday, at age 92. I feel a bit bad that I didn't know she was still alive.

I'm curious to see what kind of media coverage this gets compared to when Reagan died a few months ago. While she wasn't President, she was a catalyst, a figure-head, and a symbol of the Civil Rights movement. I'll be curious to see how this ends up in the media over the next few days.

Oxford English Dictionary - funkadelic

Posted 2005-10-07 08:29:40

I subscribe to the Oxford English Dictionary's 'Word of the Day' service. This morning, the word-of-the-day was 'funkadelic'. Never saw that one coming!

For those interested, the definition is below:

funkadelic, a. (and n.)
DRAFT ENTRY Mar. 2003
orig. U.S.

Brit., U.S. [< Funkadelic, the name of a pop group formed 1968 by George Clinton (b. 1940) after FUNK n.2 and PSYCHEDELIC a.]

Designating a type of popular music which combines funk with elements derived from soul and psychedelic and rock (such as the use of highly amplified guitars and a heavy drum beat); (more generally) funky. Also as n.

1970 (title of record) Funkadelic. 1979 Washington Post 26 July F8/1 Bootsy's Rubber Band is probably the best known of five separate funkadelic bands he runs. 1986 N.Y. Times 14 May C1/5 If old bubble gum music is on I sing at the top of my lungs, and if new funkadelic is on I bop in my seat. 1993 Toronto Life June 73/2 This funkadelic Rose side table..is made of forged steel. 1998 Girls' Life Oct.-Nov. 71/1 Nina added a funkadelic lava lamp for her own perfect touch.
