Soaring Gas Prices

Posted 2005-08-31 11:48:34

So the price of gas jumped a hell of a lot last night.

While as a typical consumer, limited to a finite amount of expendible cash, I can sympathize with everyone griping over having to pay more at the pumps, my sympathy has limits.

Over the past few years of living in Toronto, I've observed a few key facts (which I'm sure most people around Toronto observe):

- a large percentage (if not the majority) of cars on the road in the morning carry 1 person.
- there seem to be a large number of SUV's on the road that are carrying 1-2 passengers who could easily fit into a compact car
- there are a number of drivers out there who try to drive as fast as possible

All of these factors result in more fuel being burned than what's really necessary. Due to a lack of (efficient) public transportation and people's general selfishness, the prices we are seeing today seemed inevitable. People can't burn gas across North America like this and not have consequences.

That being said, I think more steps could be taken by different levels of government to try to:

- curtail the degree to which gas prices are rising
- invest more into public transportation, which would fit current economic needs on top of the environmental benefit.

I don't know much about ethanol, but will probably be reading more about it. I'm curious if it is a viable alternative to oil, given enough resources for research and development.
