Konfabulator
Posted 2005-07-29 11:31:28
I downloaded Konfabulator a few days ago at work. It's a small app that allows you to plug in little widgits for information/entertainment.
Of course, my favourite is the Simpsons Quote widget, which brings up a new Simpsons quote every 15 minutes for me. Ah, no matter what my day is like, I can get a little injection of joy 4 times per hour.

Google Earth
Posted 2005-07-28 06:37:26
In it's unending quest to supply us computer nerds with an endless supply of silly tools, Google now has launched Google Earth. It's still in it's infancy, and I find it a bit slow, but it's kind of cool.
I also really like the new 'hybrid' feature on Google Maps, which maps out street names onto the satellite view of your maps/directions.

U.S. Changes Daylight Savings
Posted 2005-07-20 07:54:17
I read an article in the Toronto Star this morning about the U.S. having changed the Daylight Savings hours to run from early March to late November. The article claims this was done 'quietly', which maybe explains why I hadn't heard anything about it earlier.
This puts Canada in an awkward spot - obviously, with some many facets of our economy linked with the States, it will create some problems to be 'out of synch' with our southern neighbours for 2 months of the year. However, should Canada be rushing to change our Daylight Savings period to match theirs, without considering what affects this will have?
I'm pretty interested in how this has come up, and will probably be posting more about this later.

Walking To Work with A Child

I've come to the conclusion that whoever came up with the saying "Step on a crack, break your Mother's back" didn't have to be anywhere on time.

Toronto Jazz Festival - Carlos Del Junco and Dr. John
Posted 2005-07-04 05:44:09
I went to catch Dr. John at the Toronto Jazz Festival last night. Man, what a show!
The opening act was Carlos Del Junco - what a band! They did a short set, but was filled with some incredible musicianship, and was the first time I saw a bass player use a bow at a blues gig. Kitchener's Shawn Kellerman was the guitarist for the band, and received a standing ovation for a solo in the middle of a song, which was pretty impressive.
Dr. John was out next, and also had a smoking band, all players from New Orleans. Despite putting on a great show, the opening act was a touch one to follow, and for me at least, stole some of Dr. John's thunder. Oh well, was still a great show - if you have a chance to check out either act, I highly recommend them.
