The National Anthem

Posted 2004-11-22 06:43:19

I was watching the Grey Cup yesterday and saw/heard something that always irritates me. The young women who sang the National Anthem (I didn't catch her name) "diva-ed" it up, and it came off as a horrible rendition. The worst thing about it was towards the end of the song, as the crowd was singing along, she did some over-the-top 'ritard' (slowed down), and threw the audience way off, so she and the audience were singing it totally out of synch.

I hope any singers out there who saw this agree with me that this is not the way to sing a National Anthem.

Is House Arrest and Community Service Enough?

Posted 2004-11-19 09:28:52

I read a Toronto Star article this morning regarding the five teenagers who glued glass to playground equipment in Burlington, and wondered if the sentence was tough enough. According to the star, the sentence was 30 hours 'house arrest' (which to a teenager, is basically grounding) and 100 hours of community service.

Now I'm not the kind of guy who likes to get lynch mobs together, but I sometimes don't really understand why 'attempted' harm and actual harm get different sentences. Shouldn't we be taking measures to curb the intent to do harm?

Ideally, it would be nice to see these 5 kids get a stricter punishment in an attempt to make them understand the seriousness of what they've done. Perhaps spending the weekends of the next 3 months in some reform school. Or perhaps a much higher amount of community service required, like 50 hours/month for the next year.

Anyhow, I'm not an expert in the situation, so perhaps these aren't good ideas. But I think these kids got off a bit light.

You've Got Hate Mail

Posted 2004-11-12 17:50:00

Well, I'm guessing my post from below generated the following hate mail. Could be from 1, 2, or 3 people, not really sure, but someone tried to sign up to my mailing list with some pretty hilarious usernames. They are:

  • You_Liberal_ProFagot_Bastards_will_burn
  • all_Liberals_GO_TO_HELL
  • Canada_is_for_dumbasses_Fags_cowards_and_French_people

Thank you for your input sir/ma'am. It certainly has given me something to think about. However, you did forget "Pinko-Commie Bastard".

    4 More Years....Sigh

    Posted 2004-11-12 17:49:22

As you may be able to guess, I'm less than thrilled with the election results in the States this week. I find it unsettling that so many of our neighbors to the south are allowing Bush to continue his harmful agenda. From what I've read, it seems that many people in middle America connect with Bush's "family values" - which I'm guessing includes not only includes being a good husband/wife/son/daughter, but includes being anti-gay, anti-abortion, etc.

Anyhow, for any of you Americans thinking of moving to Canada, I hope you are successful in your bid to immigrate here. Welcome, eh!

Check Clearing for the 21st Century Act

    Posted 2004-11-12 17:47:59

Check out the summery for this new law in the States:

"Check 21 is sweeping new federal law that takes away your ability to get back your original paper checks. Under this law, consumers will be more likely to bounce checks and may find themselves paying higher bank fees. The complicated new law gives you some rights, but those rights depend on a variety of factors, including how the merchant and the bank decide to process your check."

Soulive Blows Away the Opera House

    Posted 2004-11-12 17:47:14

I checked out Soulive last night with some friends, friends of friends, and friends of friends of friends. Man, what a show! The opening band (the James Brian band, I believe) was pretty cool, and did a good job of getting the crowd warmed up. Soulive then blew everyone away, doing some new and old stuff, as well as a pretty cool version of Hendrix's Crosstown Traffic. If you get a chance to check these guys out sometime, I highly recommend it.
